the first gift of christmas was the birth of God's son in the earth to bring to us new life. because of adam's sin in the garden of eden, man was separated from God, but jesus came that he might bear our sin, and the punishment our sin deserved. This was proof of God's love for us, for god so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever should believe in him shall not perish but have everlasting life.
